Bell Royal is a framed inset kitchen designed around the idea that cabinetry can feel like a collection of individually crafted pieces rather than one continuous fitted system.
Painted perimeter cabinetry establishes the foundation of the room, while walnut is used to create contrast and define the more furniture-like elements. A freestanding-style walnut island sits at the centre, with matching walnut hutches, floating shelves and other details carrying the material throughout the kitchen.
Furniture-style toe kicks, substantial crown mouldings, reeded glass and carefully proportioned cabinetry give the room a traditional foundation without making it feel overly formal.
The walnut island was designed differently from a conventional bank of kitchen cabinets.
It stands on individual legs and combines drawers with open shelving, giving it the proportions and character of a freestanding worktable. Even the interior was treated as part of the finished piece. Beaded backboards continue through the open sections rather than leaving the inside as a secondary surface.
Reeded drawer fronts and warm metal hardware add another layer of detail, while the walnut construction gives the island enough presence to stand apart from the painted cabinetry surrounding it.
Rather than limiting walnut to the island, AWDS repeated it selectively throughout the kitchen.
Tall walnut hutch cabinetry incorporates reeded glass doors and crown moulding, while walnut floating shelves introduce the same material around the cooking area. The repetition connects these individual pieces without requiring the entire kitchen to use the same finish.
The result is a room with hierarchy: painted cabinetry forms the architecture of the kitchen, while walnut identifies the pieces intended to feel more like furniture.
The traditional character doesn’t come at the expense of how the kitchen works.
A pocket-door coffee bar can remain completely accessible when in use and disappear back into the cabinetry when closed. A dedicated broom closet adds full-height utility storage, while the pantry extends the painted cabinetry language into a separate working area.
The kitchen also includes a custom china cabinet, giving display pieces their own place within the millwork rather than treating storage as an afterthought.
Bell Royal didn’t stop at the kitchen and pantry.
AWDS also produced the fireplace millwork for the home, carrying the same approach to proportion, detailing and custom fabrication into the adjoining living space. That broader scope allowed the millwork to relate from room to room without simply repeating the kitchen cabinetry everywhere.
