Frequently Asked Questions

Every project begins with an initial design consultation to understand your vision, lifestyle, and functional needs. During this stage, we also discuss your budget expectations to ensure they align with our level of craftsmanship. If we mutually determine that AWDS is the right fit, we prepare an initial estimate and concept presentation to establish the proposed design direction and anticipated investment. Once the initial proposal is accepted and the design retainer is received, our team begins design development, including detailed drawings, renderings, and material selections.

The design retainer is calculated as 10% of the initial estimated project value, or another amount agreed upon during the proposal stage.

This retainer allows our design team to begin developing your project in greater detail and is credited toward your overall project balance.

The retainer is non-refundable should you decide not to move forward with production.

Absolutely. We collaborate with many clients who already have their own interior designer. In fact, we encourage working with a designer if you’re completing a full-home renovation or new build. It allows for a more cohesive design experience.

Our design phase includes detailed 3D renderings, an initial design presentation, two included rounds of design revisions, custom paint and stain samples, and technical shop drawings to ensure precision before production begins.

Throughout the process, our design and manufacturing teams work together to ensure the proposed cabinetry can be executed as intended.

The design stage typically takes three to four weeks, depending on the complexity of the project, scheduling availability and how quickly design decisions and feedback are provided.

Some projects progress more quickly, while others require additional time to refine materials, layouts and details. Our goal is to give every decision the consideration it deserves while maintaining a clear path toward production.

Yes, we offer both. While virtual consultations are convenient for early stages, we recommend an in-person meeting at some point to review finishes and colours, as lighting conditions can alter the appearance of materials.

Yes. Our team provides guidance on appliance selection, space planning, and finish coordination.

AWDS works with established appliance and countertop trade partners to help coordinate selections for your project.

Clients who purchase appliances or countertops through our participating trade partners receive access to preferred pricing.

Our team can discuss available partners, product options and purchasing arrangements during the design process.

Absolutely. We offer curated samples of cabinetry finishes, hardware, and materials to help you make confident selections for your project.

All of our cabinetry and furniture are handcrafted in our state-of-the-art 15,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Caledon, Ontario. Every project is built start to finish by our in-house team of skilled Cabinet and Furniture Builders.

Our cabinet boxes are constructed from formaldehyde-free domestic maple plywood, UV-coated on both sides, rather than particleboard.

For natural wood cabinetry, we use Select Grade A veneers, custom-pressed with attention to grain consistency and sequential matching.

For painted cabinetry, we offer premium HDF and MDF doors as well as doors constructed with solid maple stiles and rails and an MDF centre panel.

Each construction method has its advantages. During your consultation and design development, we’ll discuss which materials and door construction are best suited to your project, aesthetic preferences and intended use.

Our standard options are solid maple dovetail drawers or Blum Legrabox metal drawer systems, both engineered for durability and smooth function.

We specify only the best: Blum Movento undermount soft-close slides and Blum Blumotion soft-close hinges. This ensures silent, effortless motion and long-term reliability.

We offer custom painted and stained finishes, completed entirely in-house at our Caledon manufacturing facility.

While conventional lacquer remains widely used throughout the cabinetry industry, AWDS uses a premium Italian polyurethane finishing system, selected for its exceptional durability, smoothness and long-term performance.

Our multi-stage finishing process includes meticulous preparation, sanding, priming and topcoat application in our dedicated spray facility. Each stage is handled by our own finishing team to achieve a consistent, furniture-quality result.

For stained cabinetry, we carefully develop and apply finishes that enhance the natural grain and character of the selected wood.

English framed inset cabinetry features doors and drawer fronts that sit precisely within an integrated face frame, rather than overlaying the cabinet opening. This traditional method creates a distinctive, furniture-like appearance with carefully controlled reveals and architectural detailing.

Frameless cabinetry eliminates the front face frame, allowing doors and drawers to cover the cabinet structure for a cleaner, more continuous appearance. It also offers greater accessibility to the cabinet interior.

AWDS manufactures both styles, allowing us to recommend the construction method that best suits the architecture, design and functionality of your space.

Our cabinetmaking team brings well over 150 years of combined industry experience, supported by precision manufacturing equipment, carefully selected materials and established production standards.

Each project is reviewed throughout manufacturing and installation, with attention to construction, finishing, fit and functionality.

Our confidence in that work is reflected in our warranties: a lifetime craftsmanship warranty on cabinetry construction and a two-year warranty on painted finishes.

We believe quality should be demonstrated not only in how cabinetry looks when installed, but also in how it performs over time.

Yes. All AWDS cabinetry and core components are produced entirely in-house, ensuring full control over quality, precision, and finish integrity.

Absolutely. We’d be happy to arrange a private visit so you can see your cabinetry in production and meet the team behind it.

Yes. AWDS offers comprehensive residential millwork solutions, including vanities, closets, wall paneling, bars, and custom furniture pieces, all designed and built to the same exacting standards as our kitchens.

We perform in-house colour matching for both paint and stain finishes. While we strive for the closest possible match, natural variations in wood species and aging mean that perfect matching cannot be guaranteed, as subtle differences will always exist between materials.

At AWDS, custom cabinetry is designed, engineered, manufactured and finished in our own Caledon facility, with installation handled by our team.

This vertically integrated approach gives us direct oversight of the project, from the earliest design decisions to the final installation.

Our experienced in-house design team works closely with our cabinetmakers to develop cabinetry that goes beyond standard configurations, including English framed inset construction with reveals as precise as 3/32 of an inch.

With domestic maple plywood interiors, premium Blum hardware, carefully selected materials and in-house finishing, we’re able to offer a level of customization and accountability that extends well beyond selecting cabinet doors and colours.

We use our own in-house installers. This ensures that every installation meets our standards for precision, fit, and finish.

AWDS provides professional cabinetry installation throughout Ontario.

For projects outside Ontario, please contact our team to discuss available delivery and installation arrangements.

A typical kitchen installation takes approximately five to six days, although the actual duration depends on the size, complexity and scope of the project.

When your installation date is confirmed, our team will also provide the expected installation timeline for your specific project.

Larger or whole-home cabinetry installations may require additional time.

Our installers scribe every piece for a seamless fit, minimizing the need for caulking.

Yes, absolutely. We’re happy to install handles or pulls that you’ve sourced independently.

Most appliance manufacturers recommend using their certified installers for panel-ready appliances, as using non-certified installers may void the warranty. However, our team can install the panels for an additional charge if you prefer.

Once your design is finalized, you’ll be assigned a dedicated Project Manager who will oversee your project from production through installation, ensuring everything runs smoothly and on schedule.

Yes. We take pride in providing a white-glove, concierge-level experience for our clients. Renovations can be stressful, and our goal is to make the process as seamless as possible by coordinating directly with your builder, designer, or contractor.

No. We do not perform demolition work. Existing cabinetry should be removed prior to delivery and installation of your new AWDS cabinetry.

We do not install countertops, sinks, or appliances directly. However, we work closely with trusted stone fabricators and appliance specialists, and we can facilitate communication with these trades to ensure proper coordination.

Our installation team works carefully and respectfully in every client’s home.

Site preparation and adequate protection of existing floors, finishes and surrounding areas are ultimately the client’s responsibility, typically coordinated with their builder or renovation contractor where applicable.

We’ll communicate relevant installation requirements in advance so the site can be properly prepared.

We work collaboratively with our clients and any other trades involved to resolve any issues that arise. Renovations can be unpredictable, but our team is known for its flexibility and commitment to achieving the best outcome for the client.

Yes. Every project concludes with a post-installation inspection to ensure your cabinetry meets AWDS’s standards and your complete satisfaction.

Your cabinetry is ready for normal use immediately after installation.

Our Italian polyurethane finishing process is completed and cured under controlled conditions at our facility before the cabinetry is delivered to your home.

Unlike conventional lacquer finishing systems used by many cabinetry manufacturers, our polyurethane finish is selected for its durability and performance.

This allows us to deliver cabinetry with a completed factory-applied finish, without requiring an extended curing period in your home.

Our custom kitchens start at $35,000 CAD. Every project is fully bespoke, so the actual investment depends on the kitchen’s size, cabinetry construction, materials, finishes, complexity, integrated features, and overall project scope.

During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss the scope of your project, your design preferences and your anticipated investment.

If we mutually determine that AWDS is the right fit, the next step is an initial estimate and concept presentation.

This provides an opportunity to review the proposed direction and anticipated investment before committing to detailed design development.

The initial estimate is a planning figure. Final pricing is established as the design, materials, specifications and project scope are confirmed.

Key factors include the wood species used (solid wood, veneer, or painted finishes), number of drawers, custom hardware specifications such as pocket doors or integrated lighting, and the project’s overall size and scope.

Our payment schedule is as follows:

  • 10% design retainer (credited toward the project)
  • 40% deposit once drawings are approved and production begins
  • Remaining balance due five days before delivery

No, we do not currently offer in-house financing or payment plans.

We accept credit card, cheque, EFT, and bank transfers.

We provide a lifetime warranty on the construction of our cabinetry. Paint finishes are covered for two years, Blum hardware includes a lifetime manufacturer warranty, and lighting systems come with a five-year manufacturer warranty.

You can reach us directly by phone or email for any service or warranty-related inquiries. Upon completion of your project, you’ll receive a post-care support package with all the necessary contact information and warranty details.

Installation-related touch-ups and adjustments identified during project completion are included in your AWDS cabinetry package, without additional charges.

Our team coordinates any outstanding items associated with completing the installation.

For questions or service needs arising after project completion, our team remains available to assist in accordance with the applicable warranty and service terms.

Our cabinetry is manufactured with a durable, factory-applied Italian polyurethane finish, selected for its exceptional resistance to everyday wear and its smooth, consistent appearance.

Unlike conventional lacquer, which is widely used throughout the cabinetry industry, our polyurethane finishing system is applied through a controlled, multi-stage process in our dedicated spray facility.

While our cabinetry construction is backed by a lifetime craftsmanship warranty, painted finishes carry a separate two-year warranty.

If you would like to change the colour or refresh the appearance of your cabinetry in the future, refinishing options can be discussed with our team and assessed based on the existing finish and cabinet construction.

Every client receives a post-care package outlining proper cleaning and maintenance guidelines to help keep your cabinetry in pristine condition for years to come.
