Custom Kitchen · Kleinburg, Ontario
Kleinburg pairs painted perimeter cabinetry with white oak to create a kitchen that feels bright and restrained without becoming completely monochromatic. The white oak island introduces warmth at the centre of the room, while matching wood details appear throughout the cabinetry to connect the different elements of the design.
That same palette continues beyond the kitchen. Rather than treating the servery and built-ins as unrelated pieces, AWDS coordinated their materials, profiles and finishes so the cabinetry feels consistent as you move through the home.
The island gives the kitchen its strongest material contrast. White oak fronts sit within a stone waterfall surround, creating a warmer focal point against the painted cabinetry around the perimeter.
White oak reappears in smaller details throughout the kitchen, including the range hood accent and illuminated display cabinetry. Using the material selectively allowed the different cabinetry areas to relate to one another without making every piece identical.
One of the project’s most distinctive pieces sits just beyond the island.
AWDS designed a full-height white oak display cabinet with glass doors, integrated lighting, horizontal bottle storage and central display shelves. The cabinetry transforms the area into a purpose-built feature while keeping the same white oak language established in the kitchen.
Its location also makes the connection between spaces visible from the kitchen. Rather than introducing another finish or style, the display cabinet carries the material palette into the adjoining area.
The kitchen, servery and built-ins weren’t designed as a single continuous piece of cabinetry. They were designed to belong to the same home.
Painted cabinetry provides the foundation, while white oak, warm metal hardware and repeated detailing create continuity from one area to the next. Each space has its own function and composition, but none feels disconnected from what came before it.
That’s the idea behind Kleinburg: not making everything the same, but making everything belong together.
